It’s a very teenage feeling – you always feel like you’re on the edge of something big, but that something keeps slipping out of your grasp. The game doesn’t give you too much map at first – just enough to make you feel like you’re a small fish in a big, scary pond. As you level up, you unlock more parts of the map, both in terms of the aboveground town and the underground labyrinth. When you play enough, Redacre starts to feel like an eerie version of your own hometown: a place you know well, but shrouded in darkness. I enjoy the consistency that this provides. Mission objectives in TBC are randomized, but the map is always the same. Procedural generated missions on the same map The best Stalkers are tracked on a leaderboard, and the best receive special cosmetic items. You can also opt out from Stalker play if you want. In fact, the most successful Stalkers load up on gear before trying to snoop the enemy players. The same flashbangs that non-Stalker players use to break away from guards can be used against other players. The other players can tackle you and tie you up, ending your game, but you can use weapons you find around the map against them. You want the game to go on as long as possible, providing more opportunities to record the other players, which increases your score. Enemy guards completely ignore you, and you get to use the Red Doors scattered around the map to traverse the world quickly.īut your job isn’t just to take the other players out if they all get Shaped, the game ends. The Stalker’s job is to record videos of the other players on their cell phone, which makes it more likely that the Shape will show up and take them over. The most interesting element of the game is the Stalker – an enemy player who can invade your game. Unlike Left 4 Dead, obnoxious players can’t shoot you and whittle down your health. Running away from your stupid ally and leaving him Shaped is a good way to deal with problem players. It’s pretty hard to ruin someone’s game by being a bad teammate. If you see a friend getting cornered, you can make noise and draw the guards away.Ĭhat is activated by default, and so far, the groups I’ve been with have been pretty decent. If one of your allies is grabbed by a sleepwalker, you can intervene on their behalf, knocking down the guard to facilitate your friend’s escape. If you make too much noise, you will be hunted by an agile, relentless enemy known as The Shape. For a horror game, TBC is surprisingly peaceful. You can’t kill anyone, and incapacitation costs you precious items. Others seem more aware and hunt you by sight as well. Most are sleepwalking and can only hunt you by sound. All the adults in town have been reduced to mind-controlled servants of some dark entity. Friends and enemiesĪnd you need that sense of sight because your neighbors are hunting you. It guides you towards your objectives, but you can only see the route by closing your character’s eyes. In a town rotten with dark entities, there appears to be one that wants to guide you to success. ![]() ![]() You investigate break-ins, gather evidence, search for quest items, and disable traps. You and four friends sneak around town, attempting to achieve randomly generated objectives. Your town exists in a radio dead zone, and no one is coming to rescue you. Adults are sleepwalking, there’s a labyrinth of creepy tunnels beneath the town, and dark gods are making sinister plans. You play as a member of a group of teenagers attempting to unravel a mystery in their small hometown of Redacre. The Blackout Club is an eclectic cooperative horror game that’s one part X-Files, one part Stranger Things, and one part pacifist Left 4 Dead. ![]()
